Meantime within man is the soul of the whole; the wise silence; the universal beauty, to which every part and particle is equally related; the eternal ONE. And this deep power in which we exist, and whose beatitude is all accessible to us, is not only self-sufficing and perfect in every hour, but the act of seeing and the thing seen, the seer and the spectacle, the subject and the object, are one.
The sun is simply bright. It does not correct anyone.
If you could get rid of yourself just once, the secret of secrets would open to you.
We can forget our adult selves. Just simply forget them. They’re not good for anything, not anything real, just this playing of this serious game where we dress up like big people and try to sound like we know what’s going on. We don’t know what’s going on, none of us do. Just rest here as cluelessness.
Realise enlightenment is impossible. If you could be unenlightened one moment, and enlightened the next, then enlightenment would be bound by time, would be given substance by its opposite, would be dual, would be some ‘thing’ to be attained. You do not need to be something more. Forget the need and hope. Awake is what you are, not what you become. Be willing to notice. Look at the stars, the wind, the romp of birds through the sky. Be willing to be free. Forget the sutras, the wise sayings, the path, the seriousness, the pain, the wars, the relationships, the imagined problems. Forget your objections. Hush for a moment; gently, with arms wide and open, notice the absence of anything but Life.
Awakening is not the adding of an experience but the loss of belief in the one who is imagined to lack it. Nothing really happens. The mirage was never water to begin with. Enlightenment stories are just more stories. It is delusional to think presence is dependent on something that happened in the past or will happen in the future. You are present here and now else nothing would appear, including the idea that you are a person who lacks presence.
Self is the indweller of all Beings, so love of others is Love of Self, your Self.
If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.
No matter what happens in a movie, the movie screen is not affected. When the main character ages, the screen doesn't age. When time passes on the screen, time never passes for the screen. When the main character dies, the screen remains, and is not diminished. Even when the movie ends, the screen does not end, it just remains open for the next movie - a comedy, a horror, a romance, a silent movie from 1912, a 3D blockbuster from 2012 - whatever it will be. The screen accepts it all - movie or no movie at all. The screen never fights the movie, nor does it cling to it. It has no name, no age, no identity of its own, but allows all those wonderful identities to parade themselves about, asking nothing in return. It is rarely appreciated, often ignored, but absolutely essential for the relative dance of life. The screen is pure love. It is what you are.
So the single most vital step on your journey toward enlightenment is this: learn to disidentify from your mind.
Usually, when we hear or read something new, we just compare it to our own ideas.
There is nothing better
That you can give to a person
Than to be present with them.
When you are fully present
You become love
And you share that becoming with others.
Just as a parent may say to their child, "I may not always like what you do, or agree with you, or approve of your actions, but please know that I'll always be here for you, and I will not turn away...", so who we really are, the vast open space of awareness itself, totally intimate with all of its children, its own thoughts, sensations and feelings, is ever-present, inherently non-judgemental, and would never push anything away, for it IS everything as it arises. It allows and holds all of its children unconditionally, even pain, even fear, even sadness, even doubt, deeply allowing these beloved expressions of itself to arise and fall away in their own sweet time. It would not abandon its children, for it cannot abandon itself. This is the true meaning of love, beyond all our limited human conceptions of love. It is a vast, unspeakable love, so huge that we've had to invent other words like 'awareness' just to stop our hearts from breaking.
Mental suffering denotes that you are digging in the graveyard of the past. Without touching the past, tell me who is unhappy? If you are living in the present, you are happy.
God dwells in you, as you, and you don't have to 'do' anything to be God-realized or Self-realized, it is already your true and natural state." Just drop all seeking, turn your attention inward, and sacrifice your mind to the One Self radiating in the Heart of your very being.
Once you realize that the road is the goal and that you are always on the road, not to reach a goal, but to enjoy its beauty and its wisdom, life ceases to be a task and becomes natural and simple in itself an ecstasy.
All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom.
We assume we will awaken to something else, something bigger and more grand. But really it is awakening to yourself, to what is here, has always been here. That is the startling, refreshing, wonderful, good news.
The body is actually more intelligent than the mind. With thoughts we imagine the future, and with feelings we remember the past. Only the body is rooted in present experience. The body always calls attention back to what is really happening here. As the body becomes very present to the subtlety of its experience, the sights, the sounds, its own breath, and the boundaries of self become more transparent. The self loses its definition, its competitiveness, to make the world be anything but what it is.
This is what is asked of us, over and over and over, to offer our empty hands. To let the things we are holding so tight just drop. To give it all up, everything, that does not exist in this moment here. All that has happened, that we think we somehow need to do sometning about, all that we think might happen, or we hope will happen, every sweet dream that we cling to. This is like God’s loving strip search, give it all over! Something else wants to live you. And you can feel it.
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players"
Life is a dance. We are dancing...we are being danced...we twirl and spin and leap and exalt in the sheer joy of this dance. There are no wallflowers here. It is all dance floor. It matters not if we have a partner dancing opposite us. We are joined in the dance by all the other dancers. We are all in this ballroom together, bound by the music and compelled to move to its rhythm.
My place is the Placeless,
There is no I . . . . responsibility is taken care of by Brahman, and I am that.
Do not struggle.
When you are in the world of the thinking mind, you are somewhere in the remembered past or the imagined future. You are in a world of thought, memory, concept, idea, opinion and belief. You are not here now. What you are experiencing is not of the present moment. It is not real. You are in a world of illusion (Maya) and yet you have come to believe that it real. Almost the entire human population is lost in this illusion. It is the sole source of our suffering.
The final truth, as Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj and all the sages before them have clearly stated, is that there is neither creation nor destruction, neither birth nor death, neither destiny nor free will, neither any path nor any achievement. All there is is Consciousness.
Nothing to do,
Knowing that we are looking for something we already have and are does not, of course, mean that the journey is unnecessary, only that there is a vast and sublime joke waiting to be discovered at its end.
Awakening comes unexpectedly when you do not wait for it, when you live in not-knowing. Only then are you available.
There is a place in all of us that has remained innocent, uncorrupted and untouched by the world. We have to locate that most delicate place.
You are the unchangeable Awareness in which all activity takes place.
When you know yourself, your "I-ness" vanishes
While the concept of oneness may be intellectually appealing, it is nevertheless difficult to put into practice. It's no hardship to feel oneness with great and noble beings or those we already love. It's also not too much of a stretch to experience a sense of unity with the trees, the ocean, and the sky. But most of us balk at experiencing oneness with the cockroach or the rat-let alone the obnoxious co-worker whom we barely tolerate.
When you look into a mirror you see your face as it is; you may wish that some parts of it were different, but the actual fact is shown in the mirror. Now, can you look at your conditioning in a similar way?
Humanity is now faced with a choice: Evolve or die ... If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction.
I used to think that to become free you had to practice like a samurai warrior, but now I understand that you have to practice like a devoted mother of a newborn child. It takes the same energy but has a completely different quality. It's compassion and presence rather than having to defeat the enemy in battle.
The natural state is acausal: it just happens.
God is who you are before you label yourself.
There is only one decision we need to make; either you are working at your Freedom or you are accepting your Bondage.
Throw everything away, forget about it all! You are learning too much, remembering too much, trying to hard. . . relax a little bit, give life a chance to flow its own way, unassisted by your mind and effort. Stop directing the river’s flow!
You’re just suffering from the belief that there’s something missing from your life.
In suffering, I am something
What a liberation to realize that the voice in my head is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.
The very desire to seek spiritual enlightenment is in fact nothing but the grasping tendency of the ego itself, and thus the very search for enlightenment prevents it. The "perfect practice" is therefore not to search for enlightenment, but to inquire into the motive for seeking itself. You obviously seek in oder to avoid the present, and yet the present alone holds the answer: to seek forever is to miss the point forever. You always already are enlightened Spirit, and therefore to seek Spirit is simply to deny Spirit. You can no more attain Spirit than you can attain your feet or acquire your lungs.
Why are you unhappy?
Because 99.9% of everything you think, and
Of everything you do,
Events happen deeds are done but there is no doer thereof.
Don’t try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist; use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are.
Satsang is a tongueless teacher and headless students. So shut your head, let your Heart open, and Truth will reveal itself to you in Silence. Only pay attention to That with your open Heart.
Try to remember the main points: Birth and death are like going to sleep at night and waking up in the morning. When you go to sleep at night, you die, when you dream it's like being on an astral plane, and when you wake up in the morning, it's like being born. Through those states of consciousness somebody exists, and that somebody is none other than you. In other words you are aware of dreaming. You are aware of sleeping. You are aware of waking up. You are aware of dying, and you are aware of being reborn. Somebody is watching all this, that's you. You exist through all those states. Abide in your existence, not in the states. Ignore the fake consciousness. Abide in the reality, which is called absolute awareness, consciousness. Abide in that and be free.
The best place for you is wherever you find yourself. And you will know this if you take out intention out of your mind. If you remove or leave aside any intention or any projection or any speculation out of your mind, you will find full contentment where you are. Full contentment, and you will be happy. You will be at Peace.
When you awake, you cross a line of no return, and you never see the world in the same way.
In dream you love some and not others. On waking up you find you are love itself, embracing all....When you are love itself, you are beyond time and numbers. In loving one you love all, in loving all, you love each. One and all are not exclusive.
The love that you search for everywhere is already present within you.
To seek people’s love and approval assumes that you aren’t whole.
When you realize your integral connection with the Absolute, you will realize in every sand particle, in every dust particle, everywhere is God himself. That is meditation. You need not close your eyes and sit in the meditation hall. The moment you are aware of this, you are in a state of meditation. That is the way to be happy. Otherwise you are happy inside the meditation hall and unhappy outside.
If there is a personal 'i' wanting to feel or experience true being then this is just desire and can be dropped. The personal 'i' is blocking the seeing of what you are; it is the obstacle and can never 'experience' truth. Let there be an acceptance of this point and the related desire will fall away.
Consider that the desire to be other than you are, to feel differently about yourself or your life, is only a thought distracting you from what is in perfect order, silent and peaceful at a deeper level within you.
The potential of being human is to discover that state within oneself which is beyond effort, which cannot be maintained or sustained. No effort is required for being.
Nobody ever fails in Yoga. It is all a matter of the rate of progress. It is slow in the beginning and rapid in the end. When one is fully matured, realisation is explosive. It takes place spontaneously, or at the slightest hint. The quick is not better than the slow. Slow ripening and rapid flowering alternate. Both are natural and right.
If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.
Here's some very good news.
I'm not awake, I'm not spiritually enlightened, because there's something wrong. If there wasn't something wrong I would be enlightened you see. So this idea, this felt experience, actually is a big part of what ego is you see. Cause if there's nothing wrong, all the self-contradiction just falls away. Which is of course what it does when we awaken to our true nature, and we see from the eyes of spirit rather than from the eyes of mind.
Truly there is no cause for you to be miserable and unhappy. You yourself impose limitations on your true nature of infinite being, and then weep that you are but a finite creature. Then you take up this or that spiritual practice to transcend the non-existent limitations. But if your spiritual practice itself assumes the existence of the limitations, how can it help you to transcend them?
To be aware is to be awake. Unaware means asleep. You are aware anyhow, you need not try to be. What you need is to be aware of being aware. Be aware deliberately and consciously, broaden and deepen the field of awareness. You are always conscious of the mind, but you are not aware of yourself as being conscious.
About twenty years ago, a close friend and I drove to southern Virginia to attend a retreat led by Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. At the closing ceremony, he asked us to choose a partner — I turned to face my friend — and bow to each other. He then instructed us to hug our partner while taking three conscious and full in-breaths and out-breaths. With the first breath, he said to reflect: “I’m going to die”; with the second, “You’re going to die”; and with the third, “And we have just these precious moments.” After slowly releasing our embrace, my friend and I looked at each other through our tears. Thich Nhat Hanh had, in a beautiful way, turned us toward the refuge of truth.
You cannot long for something that you do not know exists. It must be already present within you, or how would you know to long for it?
When you shift your identity from your self-image to your true Self, you will find happiness that no one can take away from you.
You ask: ‘How to live my life?’ But with the question you are suffocating life itself, for life is spontaneity.
Once a person is caught by belief in a doctrine, one loses all one's freedom. When one becomes dogmatic, that person believes his or her doctrine is the only truth and that all other doctrines are heresy.
Disputes and conflicts all arise from narrow views. They can extend endlessly, wasting precious time and sometimes even leading to war. Attachment to views is the greatest impediment to the spiritual path. Bound to narrow views, one becomes so entangled that it is no longer possible to let the door of truth open.
Belief is a cover up for insecurity . . . if something is real you don't have to believe in it, you know it.
When you realize that the whole universe is a manifestation of your mind you become omnipresence. And in the omnipresence is contained all of your needs, and all of your needs are met from within. But when you start worrying or thinking about it, you spoil it. Then you have to do human things to take care of you. But if you leave the human-hood alone, and go back to the understanding that it's all in your mind, you automatically let go of your mind, and the Self takes over, bringing the right people into your life, the right situation, the right address. Remember again, your body came to this earth because of karma. And it's going to go through whatever is has to go through. But you've got absolutely nothing to do with that because you are not your body. But if you think about it you spoil it. Subsequently, allow your body to do whatever it came here to do. Do not interfere. Do not fight. Simply observe. Do not react. You will be okay.
Doubt underlies every belief. Doubt brings defense. If you don't believe me, challenge the next person who seems to be stating Truth. When you see them defend it, notice the doubt that is coming to the surface. This is when you know it is belief. But the real juice is when you can see this in yourself, isn't it? Until then, everyone else has to do it for you.
There was never any more inception than there is now,
the Serenity to accept the People I cannot change,
the Courage to change the One I can,
and the Wisdom to know it’s Me.
What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to something that already is?
Be still. It takes no effort to be still; it is utterly simple. When your mind is still, you have no name, you have no past, you have no relationships, you have no country, you have no spiritual attainment, you have no lack of spiritual attainment. There is just the presence of beingness with itself.
This absolute intimacy of pure experiencing is what we call love.
Freedom doesn’t make you immune to the human experience; it just means you are not identified with it anymore. Being unidentified with the human experience means you can embrace fully all that comes along with being ‘an earthling’ and be totally available to life as it is
In the end, it’s all very simple. Either we give ourselves to Silence or we don’t.
Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated that that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.
Whatever comes, let it come, what stays let stay, what goes let go, always keep quiet, and always adore Self: This is the essence of living skillfully in the world appearance. During all activities of life always know that you are the Self. The way to live a happy beautiful life is to accept whatever comes and not care about what does not come.
Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the world belongs to you.
Observe your thoughts, don’t believe them.
Some believe in existence.
The soul in itself alone is not other than consciousness, which is all pervading. But when the same consciousness is caught in a limitation through being surrounded by elements, in that state of captivity, it is called soul. ... Every experience on the physical or astral plane is just a dream before the soul. It is ignorance when it takes this experience to be real. It does so because it cannot see itself; as the eye sees all things, but not itself. Therefore, the soul identifies itself with all things that it sees, and changes its own identity with the change of its constantly changing vision.
